INTELLECTUAL LIFE

Hearths of intellectual movement  existed in Arta from the Byzantine period, but also during Ottoman domination. In 1660 the Greek Faculty was founded at Arta by Fil. Manolakis from Kastoria. Schools were maintained also by several monasteries, like the Abbey of Kato Panagia. In the middle of the18th century, A. Gerostathis founded at Kompoti the Faculty of Greek Letters.

During the newer age, the intellectual life of Arta was marked by the presence of the Metropolite and known historian Seraphim Ksenopoulos or Vyzantios, Th. Tsoutsinos (1870-1939), writer and historian Mr Steriopoulos, poet and writer G. Kotzioulas (1909-1950), poet K. Kristallis (1868-1894), poet and writer M. Peranthis, historian Yannis Tsoutsinos etc.

Today the cultural societies of "Skoufas" and "Makrigiannis" contribute considerably to the cultural activities of the town. The society of ¨Skoufas ¨ was founded in 1896 and is one of the oldest Greek societies of its kind. At the same time, the society's Music Band was founded. The society publishes the ¨Skoufas¨ magazine containing historical, folklore and literature subjects. "Skoufas" also owns a rich library with lots of rare books.

A landmark for the intellectual life of the town was the creation of the Technological Educational Institute (T.E.I.) and its departments of Plant and Animal Production, Floriculture and Architecture of Landscape, Telematics and Popular and Traditional Music.
